HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL
BOARD OF GOVERNORS, MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Hastings High School Board of Governors was held last evening, when there were present; Mr 11. Holdcrness (chairman) Mrs E. M. Emmett, Messrs J. Wright, H. Brenton-Rule, A. D. Ross, E. J. W. Hallett, G. McKay, and W. A. G. Penliugton (principal) and E. A. Murley (secretary). Leave of absence was granted Messrs E. V. Simpson and G. A. Maddison. Accounts amounting to £7lO 13s Id were passed for payment. The statement of funds was received and the secretary was instructed to proceed with the collection of outside fees for the present year and with those for the year 1929. A circular was received from the Director of Education iu respect to the necessity for economy in the administration of the Boardls affairs in the present financial difficulty, and a request ma le that the Board minimise admiustrativo costs as much as possible. , „ Owing to financial depression, the following grants were refused :—Subsidy on voluntary contribution in respect of grainophone records, the erection of dressing sheds for football teams, and the extension of the agricultural tool shed. Authority was granted the Grounds. Committee for the purchase of shingle valued at £5 for the filling-in of depressions, etc., on the grounds adjacent to the school. The secretary was instructed to convey to Mr Donne the Board’s heartiest appreciation for his donation of a cage of stuffed birds, and the principal was authorised to purchase a small silver plate to be inscribed and attached to the case.
The report of the conference between members of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board and the High School Board in connection with the extension of training classes at Hastings centre was discussed, and it was resolved to adopt the lecommendation submitted by the conference, i.e, to report to the Minister of Education on the' necessity of an extension of classes in woodwork and metal work for boys at the Hastings High School and to recommend the erection of an additional room or rooms on or adjacent to the present site of the Hastings High School. The report of the recess education committee was duly received, and the commentary of the secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board and principal of the Hastings High School, and the chairman of the Auckland Grammar School Board, was discussed at considerable length. Eventually it was resolved that a sub-committee bo appointed to draft out a letter, pointing out the Board's objection to the report, with reasons, such letter to be submitted to the next meeting of the Board for consideration.
The Director of Education wrote advising that a grant of £6O 17s 6d had been approved for the purchase of science equipment for the new laboratory at the school, and the secretary was accordingly instructed to place an order for the materials in question. The question of providing football and cricket caps for the first fifteen and first eleven respectively was discussed, and it was resolved that in view of the proposed expenditure of the same that the mutter be brought to the notice of the Hastings High School League, to see if sonic assistance could not be obtained from them in regard to the expense.
