Hie annual genet al meeting of the Hastings Golf Club will be held in the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s rooms, Market street, Hastings, on Friday, October 31, at 8 p.m. For the convenience of those who have not yet procured their tickets tor this evening’s concert, they may be obtainable at Cohen’s until the doors open at 7.30 p.m. Tho annual general meeting of members of the Hastings Ladies’ Golt Club will be held in the Jockey Club rooms, Market street, Hastings, at 7.30 p.m. to-morrow (Thursday). Members, friends and supporters of the Heretaunga Swimming and Life-Saving Club are reminded of the dance to be held to-night in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Hastings. Walden’s orchestra will supply popular music. Tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce last evening passed a resolution supporting the Associated Chambers in protesting against Government interference in private enterprise in connection with broadcasting.

Tho Waimarama Sports Club will hold a fancy dress masked ball in the Waimarama Hall on Saturday, next, November I. Music will be provided by the Billie Bong Boys, and there will be prizes for the best fancy dresses. St. Leonard’s Bowling and Croquet Club will hold a “SOO” card tournament in the Pavilion, Heretaunga street, to-morrow at 7.45 p.m. Good prizes and supper will be given. A two i seater motor car, reported to havo been burned last night, attracted tho attention of motorists on the Napier-Hastings road this morning. It stood on tho side of the road near Awatoto a complete wreck. Mule evidence of an accident on the Wairoa-Napter road could be seen at tlie Waihua bridge yesterday afternoon. A motor-car had apparently plunged through the side of the bridge and lay smashed to pieces underneath if. A six-roomed residence nt Makuiro (near Pahiatua), owned by Charles Hopkins and occupied by L. A. Christensen, was destroyed by fire. Nothing was saved. Light luncheon will be provided. Rear-Admiral Kayser, before the Dutch flagship Java sailed from Auckland for Brisbane to-day, expressed gratitude for Aucklanders' Kind reception and hospitality to the lleet, and hoped that it would be the means of cementing the bond of international friendship between the Netherlands, the East Indies and the Dominion, and prove beneficial to trade relations between these countries.—Press Association.

The annual provincial conference of the fruit exporters of Hawke’s Bay will be held m the Y.M.C.A. lounge, Hastings, to-morrow (Thursday) evening at ( .31) o clock. The conference will be attended by Mr. W. Benzies, acting-secretary of the N.Z. Fruit Control Board. Business will consist of consideration of remits to the Dominion conference, which is to be held in Wellington on November 20, and also tho election of three delegates to this conference.

The Mothers’ League of the Y.M.C.A. will hold a “shop” on Saturday next, November 1, in the Villa d'Este (next Redgrave’s;. Jumble, cakes, sweets, books, magazines, produce, jam, pickles, sauces, and n-e cream will be for sale. This, the first effort of the newly-formed Mothers’ League, should command itself to all who are interested in character-building work with boys, and all who purchase will have the assurance that their money will be devoted to the boys’ work

Tho popular Catholic “500” card tournament and dance held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Hastings, last evening proved most successful, and everyone spent an enjoyable evening. A dainty supper was served after the cards and then dancing took place. The following were the winners of the “500” tourney: —Ladies, Miss O. Williamson 1, Mrs. Cadman 2, Mrs. Hodgins mystery ; gentleirgni. Messrs. I. O'Niel 1, T. Hannah 2. J Hannah mystery. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Flynn and Mr. J. H. Wyeth. The new road through the Urewera Country, from Wairoa to Rotorua, wus unofficially opened in the weekend, when parties from the Hawke’s Bay and Auckland Automobile Associations motored from their respective ends of the road and met at Papatotara, on the summit of the Huiurau Range, and continued on to Luke House and Wairoa. The road is suid to be very attractive for its scenic beauties arid is certain to be popular with motorists. In view of this it is hoped that the metalling will soon be completed ns the surface is not good in places yet.

Mr W. Goodfellow, who returned to New Zealand from' Sydney yesterday, said that the outlook for the coming season was extremely uncertain, and that no one could accurately forecast tile probable course of the produce market. If the depression continued. New Zealand would have to be prepared to accept very low prices. He indicated that he would not be surprised to see the butter market down to a considerably lower figure than at present quoted.

At the Napier Police Court this morning, before Mr C. F- H. Pollock, J.P.. Alan Arthur Mclntosh (Mr C. W. Nash), charged with breaking and entering the warehouse of Ellison and Duncan Ltd., and stealing cheques and goods therefrom to the total value of .£ll5 16s 7d. was remanded until Friday, October 31. Robert Roy Heath (Mr C. D. Cornford), charged with that being a clerk in the employ of the Napier Borough Council he stole tho sum of £lll Gs 2d. tlie moneys of the said Mayor, councillors and burgesses of the borough of Napier, wns remanded until November 12.
