A uew railway by-law, making it illegal for unauthorised persons to solicit custom in railway carnages, was notified in the Gazette last evening.

Sixty-two men. all returned soldiers, employed on Invercargill city works, finished work last evening owing to a subsidy from the Unemplov ment Board not being forthcoming The Mayor states that three tele grams have been sent to the board but no reply has been received.

The pupils attending the secondary department of tho Waipukurau District High School held their annual “breaking-up” social last evening, musical items, recitations, competitions, and dancing forming nart of the programme. The function proved a prononficed success.

Sixteen blocks of land, from North Auckland to Southland with a total area of 61,000 acres, are at present under development or are being prepared for that purpose, according to a comprehensive review of its land development activities covering the past two years issued by the Government yesterday.

Latest reports from the fishing districts indicate that good catches of well conditioned fish continue to be made. Lakes Taupo, Rotorua, Rotoiti, Waikareiti, Berewhakaitu, Waikaremoana and the differnt rivers connected with the lakes have all provided good sport for New Zealand anglers and those from overseas.

Unless bad weather interferes with the attempt, Miss Mercedes Gleitze, the famous long-distance swimmer, will set out on her Cook Strait swim on February 9 next. If the weather is bad tlic swim will bo postponed until February 25. The swimmer is waiting until the sea is at iu warmest.

Leslie Draper was arrested on a charge of false pretences in Wanganui yesterday and charged with issuing a valueless cheque to Edgar Meredith, New Plymouth. Ho was remanded until December 20 at New Plymouth, where he will be charged with the offence, and also with about 20 similar charges allegedly committed throughout tho North Island.

The Pahiatua County Council resolved that all wages, salaries, also councillors' travelling expenses, be reduced 10 per cent., the matter to bo reviewed ill three mouths. It was also decided to dispense with the services ot uiirni employees who have other means oi support. A resolution was passed that the time had arrived for the Government to reduce all salaries and wages in ail departments, also that the Arbitration Court be alolished Press Association.

Early iu 1931 a Dominion-wide egglaymg competition, arranged for the benefit of New Zealand’s poultry breeders, is to. be inaugurated at Massey College. The competition will bo held al the college poultry department, and will be under the supervision of Mr Kissling. Teams for the competition will consist of six birds, conforming to the requirements of the Agricultural Departments utility poultry standard.

A procession of some thirty unemployed men assembled in Customhouse (juay, Wellington, yesterday morning and subsequently marched two abreast up Willis street and so through the city. The purpose of the demonstration was evidently to attract attention to the existing state of unemployment, and to distribute typewritten circulars, announcing an intention of advancing on Parliament Buildings on Tuesday next “to demand the immediate payment of sustenance.”

Au increase of one balf-penny an hour in wages has been granted by the Arbitration Court to two out of six classes of workmen covered by the Northern District Electrical Workers’ Award (states an Auckland Press As sociation. Tho rates for linesmen have been advanced from 2/2 to 2/21 an hour, and for linesmen’s assistants from -1/114 to 2/-. The term of the award is two years, from January 5, 1931, to a corresponding date in 1933.

The reconstructed cable-telephone system across to Marlborough Sounds was formally opened yesterday at Portage. Mr E. F. Henly, Member for Wairau, represented the Post-master-General. This improvement puts tho settlers in clear communication with all parts of the Dominion, and is expected to render the Sounds regions much more attractive from the tourist and holiday point of view and also gives the same facilities for communication to Sydney and London as the centres. —Press Association.

Jenkins, 3500 shares: Sir Walter Stringer, Major-General Sir George Richardson and the Hon. E. W. Alison. M.L.C., 500 shares each: Mr. G. O. Munns, M.P., 200 shares : Mr. W. J. P. Hodgkins and Mr. B Noakes, 100 shares each. Mr Jenkins is chairman of the irovisionnl board of directors. The main object of the company is to acquire land fnr the cultivation of Tung oil trees and other trees. It will also carry on the business of fruitgrowers.

In the course of the Hastings High School “breaking-up” ceremonies last evening, the students opened the proceedings bv singing “Gandeamus igitur.” and after the presentation ot prizes the girls, under the baton of Miss M. A Steele. L.A.8.. sang “The Sea Kina” (Villiers Stanford), “Where the Bee Sucks” (Arne). “O, Wert thou in tho Cauld Blast” (Men. delssohn). “Bobbie Shaftoe’’ (Roy Thompson). “See, the Conquering Hero Comes” (Handel), and “Creation’s Hymn" (Beethoven). The clear, fresh voices of the pupils had an invigorating effect, whilst their expression and their attention to the baton showed excellent discipline. The school orchestra, under the conduct of Mrs W C. Whitlock, played “Gavotte from Overture in D” (Bach) and “Serenade” (Haydn), each of which was treated with i.n ease and a capability which established them with the audience from the start. Their bowing was excellent and they possessed a confident, but unassertive, presence, which M a "nnsidernhle asset on the concert platform.
