THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1877.
j The petition against the return of Mr Matthew Byrne haying ended in a bottle of smoke, the Council will probably now settle down to business in earnest. Until tbe dissolution of tbe Road Board has been brought about tbe path of tbe Council will not be absolutely free for progress, but tbe end of tbat body is now approaching, and probably in about another month it wiii pass into oblivion, when the Council will at once assume the entire control of the whole affairs and works ot the County. The recently appointed Engineer of the County has arrived and entered upon tbe duties of his office. He has already inspected the various maintenance contracts under the Board, and as these contracts will expire in the course of a few weeks be has been instructed to see tbat all the roads are fully up to contract terms before being taken over. Yesterday Mr Butler left for Matakitika ineompany with Mr Carreras to inspect the overland road to Nelson. ]t was reported early in the week that an extensive landslip bad taken place on tbe road between Hampden and what is known as the " Top House." The General Gorernmpnt has consented to allow a sum of £500 towards restoring tbe road and otherwise improving it, and it is more immediately in connection with these works that Mr Butler has visited Matakitika. The first and by far the most important work demanding the attention of the Council at tbe present time is the Grey road, and it is reassuring to leara that immediately that tbe Engineer bas completed bis flying survey of tbe County, be will be settled upon tbe survey of the work. There is also another work of considerable importance to a large section of tbe Couoty inhabitants, wbich baa j also the serious attention of tbe Council. We now refer to tbe road wbicb is to connect Antonio's with tbe main Orey and Reefton road. Notice of motion on tbe subject bas been tabled in tbe Council, and the desire of tbe members, as already ex* pressed, is tbat immediately tbe services of tbe Engineer are available they will be devoted to the survey and prepartion of plans for the construction of the work. The Council has not yet received any direct payments under tbe Counties Act, and bas been content witb a small overdraft, but the first subsidy will probably be at tbe disposal of the Council in about two months time, and the amount it is expected will be sufficient to enable tbe body to proceed with tbe execution of a number of pressing public works.
