INDEPENDENT.
The contractors are making excellent progress with the shaft, and expect to hare the necessary distance completed in a fortnight. The completion of this work will prove what has been known as the Wealth of Nations east reef to exist in this Company's ground, and to lire down for over eighty feet from the point where it was first met with in the shaft. Independently of tuts lode, there is another body of stone which has already been sunk on and proved below the upper level for 150 feet. I learn that on the comple 'ion of the present contract it is) the intention ot the directors to construct a low tunnel upon a level to command 200 feet of backs below the old level ; the distance required to be driven will be between 700 and 800 feet, which doubtless appears a rather costly undertaking, but the works already constructed having shown the existence of a wy large quantity of payable stone, there is every reason to believe the undertaking will eventaally meet with a most successful result, and it must certainly be admitted that no company on this field is more deserving of success for the im'iring exertions th*y have displayed for the last four years.
