WEALTH OP NATIONS.

WEALTH OP NAHONS. Wednesday, May 30. It is mucb to be regretted that circumstances tbis week not admit of the usnal and uninterrupted progress being recorded. Tbe battery is now at a standstill iv consequence of an immense portion of tbe hill-side near tbe machifie ; bouse having settled down bodily and ; damaged the race to an extent that at present it cannot be stated how long it i will take to effect tho necessary repairs. The distance of the race damaged is ( certainly very small, but the nature of i

-—..■ . i .. the ground appears to be so broken that an immense quantity of loose mullock and rubble will have to be shifted before anything like a solid formation can be reached to sit the fluming npon. Part of the ground which has slipped forms a portion of the Vulcan Company's mine, and the mouth of their tunnel is also damaged by * the same occurrence. Some slight controversy has taken place as to the actual oause of the accident referred to and it is a difficult matter to attribute any blame either to one company or the other. It may simply be set down as owing to the remarkably loose nature of the ground and the heavy surface drainage at this season of the year. Every possible effort is now being made to remedy the evil, and this morning tbe water was turned on and a number of hands engaged sluicing the loose debris and mullock from the hill side, in order to get a solid foundation for the erection of the boxes again. Upon matters of the iuterior working of tbe mine, the only item of interest is that water fbr ventilating purposes hss been brought on, nnd driving in the Enterprise tunuel is resumed.
