Wellington, August 9. Government have taken steps towards establishing two Schools of Mines, one in Canterbury and tbe other in Otago. A Select Committee has been ap. pointed to enquire into the best means of establishing the manufacture of beet sugar. The debate on Mr Macandrew's lution re the construction of certain Otago railways, was adjourned till next Thursday, in order to. see what she Government Bill for the construction lof branch railways in like. \ The cirrumstances mnde." which the Government paid off the overdraft of the Thames Borough is to be enquired into by the Public Accounts Committee. The Goldfields' Committee is to be instructed to report what steps should be taken for the encouragement of prospecting for gold and other precious minerals, and what reward should be paid for discovery of new goldfields. A Commission will enquire into alleged acts of telegraph officia's- altering Press telegrams, aud to define what should be accepted as Press lelegrams. Mr Seymour moved to do away with free railway passes to hon. members. Tbe debate was interrupted by 5.30. Wellington, August 11. The Public Works Statement was applauded ab the conclusion. . Mr Joyce expressed great surprise that there was no 1 mention of a line between Riverton and Orepuke, and dwelt at considerable length on the terrible- hardships miners suffered for want of such a line, because the roads were imi^assable iu winter time. Such a work would form part of the maid line and would' open up millions of acres of agricultural land. , Mr Barff complained that there was no line projected between G-reyniouth and Hokitika, which would pay as well as any in thio Colony.. The House then adijourned.
