Otm Lyoll correapondonfc dtviwa aN tcntion fco a matter which npponrs well worthy of tho consideration of tbo County Oouncil ITo points out. thnfc tbo froquont interruptions to tralfio by "landHlipa on the Weatport-Koefton Koad could be in a great part, if not wholly, obviated by fche construction of permanent walla against the side** lings, to provo nt tho slip of tho earth. At present, after every heavy shower of rain, a few barrowßl'ul or cartloads of earth alip from the aidelinga on fco tho road, Bomefcimoa carrying away portions of the road itself, nnd thus traffic ia stopped, whereaa if facing* of flfcouo wore erected at the moat dangerous points those small slips could be prevented. The cost of erocting permanont walls would not, it is thought, bogreatof than that of effecting these constant repairs, and communication would, at tbo least, bo loss liable to interruption, Ifc is woll known that on fcho old Greymouth and Ahaura horsetrade past the Coal Pits, whero the formation was much fcho same as on tho Buller Road, communication was constantly interrupted by landslips, until at Iwngfch tho stono facings were used, and the difficulty was obviated. A-i stone is, wo believe-, easily procurable along the Westport route, tho experiment seems at all events worthy of a trial, and as the cost is not likely to be heavy, we commend the matter to the attention of the County En* gineer. The wot season is now approaching, and iv view of the increasing traffic between Reefton and Wefllport, anything which can be done to facilitate traffic on tho lino ought not to bo negleoted.
