Wo tftko tho following from tho Wellington Chroniclo :— Thoro was a very long nnd usoleas discussion over tho item placed on tho Estimates for ibo XTshnr of tho Blnck Rod for the Legislative Council. Tho Government placed tho item of £250 on tho papor at the request of tho Sponltor of tho Upper House— a fact which they explained, and thnn loft it to the House to say wholhor it should bo passed, For an hour and a half members bubbled over this extravagance, ono or two openly charging somcono with jobbery, and a desiro to provido for somebody. Mr M'Loan was understood to suggest that tho billot should bo offered to ono of tho gentlemen it was understood Government intendod to 'raiso' shortly, while Mr S wanton spoke contemptuously of that thing— tho Spoakor's mnco— ana protested against tho trumpery of tho item. Aftor boating tho air for an hour and a half tho item was struck out, on a division, Ayes, 40 ; Noes, 23. In tho Government Gazotto, Mr Balkin, tho Rcceivcr-Gonoral, acknowledges tho rocoipt, from somo person unknown of £15 as " cotißcionco money." That person unknown, tho Post thinks, must hnvo r purso and consoionco both abnormally largo.
