As soon as he could approach the mouth of the pit he called down to ask what had happened, and heaid a voice reply, " Fetch help." He at once obtained assistance from a neighboring colliery, and some men attempted to descend, but were obliged to relinquish the attempt for a time, owing to the shaft being filed with sulphur. Py throwing down buckets of water the foul air was cleared, and two m?n descended. On arriving at the bottom they found the whole six men dead. Meantime some hundreds of people had collected on •he bank, and mu.jh excitement prevailed. As quickly, as possible the bodies were brought up, and medical assistance being at hand, efforts at resuscitation were mide, but without avail. The accident is supposed to have been caused by one of the men incautiously lifting up a portion of a temporary scaffolding under which gas had accumulated, and this escaping caught one of the candles and caused the explosion. Five widows and more than twenty orphans are left.

It eoni sisted of tea, plum cake, cheesp, and cold meat, and was served chiefly in two class rooms, but partly in one of the galleries of the chapel. Ail the guests were men, many of whom had served long terms of imprisonment. The majority had a subdue J, even wretched appearance, but some adopted a jaunty air, while a few had the hardened look of the true Ishmaelite, familiar with many 'jugs.' After supper a meeting was held in the chapel, Sir E. Dv Cane, chairman of the Prison Commission, presiding. The Chairman hoped that he should not meet any of his hearers under less plea» sant circumstances. [A, laugh.] Pointing out the mistake made by young criminals in supposing that they will not be caught, and remarking that thieves are obliged to yitld the bulk of their pr fits to receiver*, who run less risk than themselves, he enforced the maxim that honesty is the best policy. He also dwelt on the value of religion as a safeguard from crime. Sir R. Carden, who was loudly cheered, raised a laugh by the observation thufc some present must know him. The sight before him was, however, most touching and satisfactory. After a description of his own work among criminals, he promised to do with the greatest pleasure anything in his poorer to help his hearers. (Cheers.)— An address having been given by the Rev.
