A meeting of tbe members of the *Pire Brigade and principal property owners of the town was held in the Engine<-room last night. The meeting held for the purpose of considering the present financial position of the Brigade, and the most advisable steps to be taken to place the organisation upon a more efficient and satisfactory footing Mr "Wilson, the West Coast representative of tbe New Zealand Insurance Company, was present, as also Messrs Lee, M'Graffin, Wise and otber local Agents. Mr Ceilings, the cap* tain of the Brigade, occupied tbe chair. A long and desultory discussion ensued, in tbe course of wbio!) the opinion was generally expressed that the only way out of the difficulty was to petition the County Council to strike a special rate. Mr Wilson, as also the otber representatives pf the Insurances Offices expressed readiness to contribute jointly towards the maintenance of tbe Brigade, stating that they would meet to-day and fix tbe amount they would recommend the bead Offices to grant- After some further discussion the meeting agreed to adjourn until to-night, in order that it might be ascertained in tbe interval what, amount tbe Insurance Companies would contribute.
