Gentlemen, — In accordance with instructions received from the Council, we 1 JfS'Ocleded to the Matiri road on the 7th instant to inspect the contract which Mr Hunter was carrying out, and which he stated was completed to the satisfaction of the Overseer in that part of the County. We commenced our inspection of the road on the end next to GibbY accommodation house at the Longford, and traversed the whole length to the Matiri river, carefully noting as we went along the defects in the construction and departures from the specifications whenever they occurred. The County Engineer (Mr Gardner), Mr O'Kourke, the Overseer, and Mr Hunter, accompanied us the whole of the distance. On our arrival at the Matiri, we deemed it advisa^>"lo retrace our steps, and in companjr **with Mr Gardner and Mr O'Rourke at once proceeded to point out • o Mr Hunter the various defects in the contract which must be made good before we would recommend the Council to grarftThrnf aT|eefffio^&. After completing our inspection of the road, we instructed the engineer to state to him in writing the various works io'bo pef formed, and request him to tell us whether or not he was wiring to carry them out, a copy of the Engineer's letter is attached to this report. Mr Hunter received the original on the evening of r the 7jth.
