» An adjourned meeting of the Council was held at the Council Chambers, on Wednesday last, at 4 p.m. Present ; Mr P. Brennan (Chairman), and Messrs Davies, Byrne, and Williams. From William Hunter, re road diversion of Chinamen at Hampden ; and asking that the Council allow Mr Snod« grass to report on Matiri road works. Fro.n Henry Feast, re weights and measures. From E. Masters, M.H.8., explaining re hospital vote, &c. From Undersecretary PuMio Works, stating that the Government had not au« thorised the money voted for the Maruia road, <md also stating that steps bad been taken to spend the money as judiciou-ly as possible. From ''alph De Young, re informing the Council that Mr E. Moore was build' ing a cow-shed on the reserve near iis place, ard asking the Council to order him to desist. From James Ribet, re punt reserve. From E. Masters. M H.R., asking an explanation re Maruia road. From Mr O'fiourke, re Mr Hunter's contract. From Mary Adams, re a claim for compensation in the matter of an injury sustained by her son. with the subject matter oF Mrs Adams' letter. Prom E. Masters M.H.R., re arrival of Minister of Public Works. From Richard Keeves, M.H.E., re Hospital and Maruia, road, and informing the Council of the amounts voted for the Matakitaki, Maruia, and Matin roads. From John Bell, asking the Council to grant some compensation to him for acting as ferryman at Larry's Creek. Matter ordered to stand over, and that the Engineer make enquiries in the meantime about the matter. From E. Masters, M.H.R., re Hospitil vote, and second moiety of rates, <fee. From Colonial Treasurer, stating that Hospital vote and second subsidy of rates would be forwarded at once. From Crown Lands Office, Wellington, re appointing Council Trustees lor Beefton Cemetery. , From Messrs Byrne and Reilly. requesting that the Public Works Com» roittee inspect their road, The Public Works Committee were instructed to comply with the request contained in Messrs Byrne and Reilly's letter. From George Barman, asking the Council to reconsider a former application of hrs re the erection of two bridges. The consideration of the letter ordered to stand oyer until a full meeting of the Council was present. From Ej Lynch, re application made by Alexander Boas for an agricultural lease. From Thomas O'Sourke, re works, &a,, required to be done in the Hampden Riding. From Mrs Lowe, asking the Council to re-consider their decision relative to charitable aid. The Chairman was empowered to deal with the matter. From Mr Junker, re Mr Minderman charging ferries. Mr Davies moved, seconded by Mr Byrne, »nd carried, that Mr Junker be informed that the carrier of any mail can not be charged ferries over any river under the Public Works Act, and that Mr Mindermann be also informed of this resolution. From George Morrell, re being rated for 186 acres, whereas he should be only rated for 86 acres, The Clerk was instructed to notify Mr Morrell that be must object in accordance with section 19 of " The Rating Act, 1876." From Mr O'Rourke, stating that Mr Hunter's contract was completed. From Mr Hunter, stating his contract was completed, and asking if money was available. From Thomas Lynch, offering to complete tbe said deviation in Walker's track for * certain amount, and also offering to complete the said track to Lanky's Creek for a certain amount. Matter ordered to stand oyer until next meeting, Mr Davies moved, seconded by Mr Trennery, and carried, that the Engineer report as to tbe situation of land applied for by Alexander Ross, and as to whether he thought the probability of its being auriferous. From Receiver of Gold Revenue at Lyell and Ahaura, forwarding lists o miners rights issued during 1879, From Mr Lynch, re Mr Gallagher's resolution. From John M'Gaffin and others, asking that the Council convene a public meeting for the purpose of devising the test means of relieving the distress in Ireland. Proposed by Mr Davies, that the Chairman convene a public meeting at an early date, for the purpose of carrying out the object of the foregoing requisition. Seconded by Mr Byrne, and carried. A letter from J. I. Aiken and others was read, asking the Council to recom mend that the Goyernment have a Bottle License Act passed at the coming session of Parliament for the Province of Nel« son. Proposed by Mr Davies, seconded by Mr Byrne, and carried, that tbe correspondence as read be received. The committee appointed to deal with the Beefton Public Pound sent in their report, with a scale of charges annexed. Proposed by Mr Davies, that the res port and scale of charges be received and adopted. Seconded by Mr Byrne, and carried. Proposed by Mr Trennery, seconded by Mr Byrne, and carried, that this meeting stand adjourned until 7. 30 p.m. The Council resumed at 8 p.m. Present : The Chairman (Mr P. Bren« nan), and Mr Gallagher. A quorum not being present, the Chair* man further adjourned the meeting until 9 p.m. The Council resumed at 9 30 p.m. Present : Mr P. Brennan (Chairman), and Messrs Trennery, Williams, and Byrne. Moved by Mr Trennery, seconded by Mr Byrne, and carried, that the Chairman communicate with the members for the district, asking them to us* their influence with the Government to have a Bottle License Act pnssed at the coming session of Parliament for the Provincial district of Nelson. Messrs Gallagher, M'Gaffin, and Davies then took their seats. Mr Davies laid a petition on the (able. Proposed by Mr Trennery, seconded by the Chairman, and carried, that tbe petition be read.

Moved by Mr Gallagher, seconded by Mr Trennery, acd carried, that the Engi neer fake immediate steps to prevent Boatman's Creek cult ing through a blind creek adjoining, which cutting nil! cause four chains of the main road to be washed away, and about two acres of land. Prowled hy Mr Davies, that the road from Johnston's farm to the nuin Grey mad be laid off by the Engineer by a me of pegs, not more than one chain apart. The motion not being spconded, lapsed. Proposed by Mr Williams, seconded by Mr Gallagher, and carried, that the Fn?inees' instruct Mr Ol r ?onrke to do the nefesssr? repairs, which may be requisite \o the Marti'ia trick. Proposed by Mr Davies, seconded by Mr Trennery i and carried, that the Engi* neer 'prepare specifications snd call for tenders for fencing off or filling op all dangerous boles on public roads within the town boundary of Reefton. Tenders to dose on the 18' h instant. Proposed by Mr Davies, seconded by Mr M'Gaffin. and carried, that the Eneineer report to the next meeting of the Council what works are necessary to place Ihe Reefton Cemetery in order, and also furnish an estimate of the cost. Proposed by Mr Williams, seconded hy Mr Byrne, and carried, that the necessary repairs be done to the bridge across the Left%hand Branch in Boatman's O-eek. and also that ferns be cleared off the road. Proposed by Mr Pavies, seconded by Mr M'Gaffin. and carried, that a special meeting of the Council be held at the Council Chamber, on PWay, tlie 13 h day of February, 1880. at 3 o'clock p.m. Business : To make a special order st iking a separate rate of threepence in the £ on the annual value of »H rateable property within that portion of the B*d» ing of Bpefton, as defined by the following boundaries :— On the north by the Buller Boad, on the south by the Inangahua river, on the east by Donovan* street, and a line from the northern end of the said s'r^et to the junction of Bridgesstreet and the Buller road, and on the west by aline commencing at the 8 u ( h» western corner of section No. 137 Square 131, running northerly, and ter» ruinating at the nearest point on the Buller Road, Proposed by Mr Davies, seconded by Mr Brennan, and carried, that the Chairman, and Messrs Trennery, and M'Gaffin, be appointed to prepare a petition to the Ffonorable, the Minister* of Justice^ asking for the appointment of a Resident Magistrate and Warden, and also to take the necessary steps to obtain signatures thereto. The accounts were then presented. Proposed by Mr Gallagher, seconded by Mr M'Gaffin, and carried, that the accounts as read and corrected bo passed for payment. Notice op Motion— The Chairman to move at next meeting of Council, that tenders be called for the construction of 100 chains of road from the main Grey Road in the direction of th Of ututu terrace, and on the line laid off by Mr Holloway, Government Sor» veyor. Payments to be made on the deferred system. The meeting lapsed at midnight.
