NEW ZEALAND PROGRESS.
- ■- •♦ The first census of the colony was taken in December, 1858. thns (he twenty years between that and 1S?8 truly bridge-* over a remarkable gulf in the history of New Z --nland's progress. In 1P53 there were 12 812 inhabited houses, which have increased to 79.657 in 1878; the lan'l under cultivation did not exceed 141,007 acres, wln"l«t the labour of tweniy years shows 3 523 277 acres as a result. In 1858 there were 14,912 hnrsps ; and in 1878 they hud increased to 137 768. The rattle had increased from 137 204 to 578 430 ; the sheep from 1.523 224 to 13 069 338 ; and the pigs from 40.734 to 207.337. No one could imagine, running down the Ions; line of figures representing the material progress of the coon'ry duHng thperiod under notice that for more than half that tim** the colonists were engaged in a life and Heath struggle with the aboriginal inhabitants of the country — that whilst commerce fl unshed and settlement progres-ed, war, in some of its worst features, was be ng waged in the North I?land, Yet so it was. Great, therefore and striking as have been the results of British colonization in New Zealand, what would it have been if the energy and capital of both races, waited in war, bad been diverted into peaceful channels.
