REEF. ON FIRE BRIGADE.
[TO T^E EDITOR INAifGABFA fIME&.] Srß, -In rejly to M r Ytgilaute s letter, suggesting that the Fire Brigade should practice more in the lack streets, especially the Strand ; also seating that had ihe liie fire lieen utiaclfed in the premises 'i ihe rear, the fi e woujii have d"tie |es« lanvige : I would Itlje io draw his >' -> 'ention io ihe following facts, vi?., — That the number of members of tbe Brigade ' who. attend praptipp is too sm^ll to take J i
the engine where locomotion is difficult; but if Mr V. and a few others would join the Brigade, we might he sufficiently numerous to effect the object desired. At the lute fire the back p-Ttions ot th<> back portions of the premises were not assailed by the Brigade at first, because the largest amount of t mber in the build ings was in the front, and consequently the greater body of fire would be there* and a branch was kept playing on the buildings on each side to prevent it spreading either up or down the street. If we had a hose reel we cuuld have got the water on to the fire sooner, and there' y have saved the stock in the adjoining premises. In the absence of the red it is necessary that those who assist to get the engine to work should be previously practised in coupling, &c, to be speed? at it. The remedy lies in forming a strong and efficient Brigade, and if people interested would assist by j ining and attending practice, they would be more useful at a fire than Vigilantly criticising the aeti/an of the nucleus of the E.V.F.B. Yours, &c, W. G. CALLINGS.
