There was a sitting of the Magistrate's Oourt yesterday, j;he day being for * the most part taken up with the hearing of two informations against James I. Aiken, store* keeper, for retailing fermented and spirituous liquors, not being duly licensed. The same informations came before the Courfc at its last sitting, but both broke down in consequence of an informality in the wording of the informations. The evidence tendered yesterday was merely a repitition of that given at the previous hearing, and which was duly reported in our columns. Mv Inspector Feast conducted the prosecution, and Mr TJynch appeared for the defence. In the first case— that of supplying the witness Tauglian with a bottle of gin, the Magistrate said there was no doubt whatever of the defendant's guilt morally, but it had not been proved in a legal sense, and the in forma s tion would therefore be dismissed. Upon the second charge of permitting a bottle of ale to be sold upon bis premises he was found guilty, and fined in the sum of £30 and costs. Notice of appeal was given. During the progress of the Magistrate's Court yesterday a man in the body of the hall once or twice yawned audibly, but the wakeful eye of tbe orderly fastened on the offender, and a subsequent yawn, a little louder than any of the preceding ones, having attracted the attention of the Bench, his Worship ordered the culprits removal. Upon this tbe police seized the man and proceeded to" run him" out with as much roughness as policemen in general are in the habit of exercising when engaged in the useful work of "running men in." His Worship, however, very properly interposed, and directed the officers to "be gentle," The rebuke was a very timely one, and had an effect which tbe force, both here and elsewhere, would do well to take to heart.
