PUBLIC SERVANTS.
(to the editor Inangahda Tim ss.) 'Sir,— Can you iofoim me wheUier there is anything in the Cuil Service Regulations which' permits officers of the Government to run head o?er heels in debt "with tradesmen, and then aiiows * themio offer a small and very doubtful composition to their creditors, and clear out to another place to langb. at their deluded victims, and at the same fitne hold their appointments in the service ? I say it is a siu and a scandal upon the Civil Service that ilsis sort dfi. thing should be allowed. No less itaa three Government officiils have cleaved out of Ifeefton in this way, each of them bilk* ing their butchers and bker9, and in fact everybody they coulil get credit from. What sort of men is th« Government service composed c ff that this state of things can be allotred ? And what Bort of a Govermetifc must it be that will harbor or shelter such dishonesty. I say unliesit atinyjly tbaf, tbis sort of thing casts infamy upon the public service, and a regulation should be introduced allowing no officer to compromise with his i creditors under pain of immediale dis» missal. Asitis.tl^? li'fl beyond. their ' mepfts, «'c the pdwel* of their, pesttlon to sfave off payment aud wh.cu things »et 100 hot for lliem, remove to another Jisirtiet, and Jiaviug genteely whiteswashed them* selves, may repeat the operation. I say, sir, the Press is very 'much to blame for winking at this kind of thing, and I now mate tins direct appeal to you to lay the ease before the public, so that tho attention of the Government may be called to it. Hoping in the interest of the community you will publish this letter. I am, &c, VICTIM. Eeefton, February 28, 1880.
