There is considerable excitement ia Gisborne about the oil springs. A member of the firm of Clarke Bros., of Melbourne, and Mr Fleming (repre* sentative of Canada at the Me. bourne Exhibition, and an oil expert) have visited the springs. Mr Fleming says the indications are equal to anything in America. It is believed probable that a company with a capital of £60,000 wili be floated to work the oil. Mr Johnston, relieving officer afc Wellington, has reported to the Colonial Treasurer his approximate esti« mate of the unemployed in Wellington, which is as follows : — Carpenters saw-mill hands, &c., 112 ; iron workers 115; coachbuilders, smiths, &c.,20; plumbers and gas-fitters, 26 ; pa nters, and paperhangers, GO; printers, 12; laborers, nayvies, &c, 200 ; clerks aod drapers' assistants, 30, total, 577.
