STEAM BOILERS.
1 — — ♦ — ™- 1 The chief engineer of the Manchester i Steam Users' Association in a recent i monthly report oalls especial attention io i a boiler explosion which lately took place 1 at Halifax, and which, he says, raises the * qut'Mini! whether the application <n «h-
been insured since it was laid down in 1871, had not undergone an internal examination for sore than four years ; and although the boiler was badly constructed and was tearing itself to pieces little by little every day, it was kept in work. The owners received no warning of the danger, am considered the boiler perfec'ly safe till it burst, killing one of the partners, the manager and four of the workmen. Every boiler should be exainined internally and in the floes once every yenr, and it is very generally suppo^ed that insurance companies will inspect boilers insured with them in their own interest. But this idea is fallacioos. A joint stock company is formed for the purpose of profit, and not for philanth* ropby ; and it costs more to make competent inspections than it does to let boilers burst and pay compensation.
