THE LYELL.

| .——^-—- --(Fhom ora owsr Corbespondent.) The new five»head stamper battery for the Alpine Company has been delivered at the Lyell, having been conveyed per waggons from Westport. A contract bas been let to Mr G. White of Westport to convey it from Lyell to the machine-site on Alpine hill. This piece of machinery, wben erected, will be a great acquisition to the crushing power of this company, and ought to materially assist the shareholders to more frequently contemplate the dividends from this hitherto unprofitable mine. The old battery is pounding and a cleaning up may soon be expected. A deputation went down from Lyell to the Inangahua Junction, consisting of Messrs Fennell and Metcalf, to lay before the Minister of Public Works the necessities of the Lyell distriot. In answer to the deputation about the money voted for bridging the Buller near Lyoll, the Minister said the money was already spent having been distributed among other districts. This p'ainly shows that money may be voted by Parliament for a particular district, and be misappropriated elsewhere evidently by a not overssornpulous Ministry. Mr Olliver promised upon his return that the six hundred pounds voted for the track to New Creek would be immediately ex% pended, and tenders called for the work, wbich shows the district will derive some little good from the visit. Mr Bicbard Beeves, member for the district, states it is owing to his persuasion that the Minister condescended to visit this part of the Middle Island, Mr P. Brennan, your County Chairman, and Councillor Gallagher, who is a member of the Public Works Committee have been down interviewing the different road contractors, and have instructed tbe County Engineer to use that wellknown mechanical power called the " screw," to wind up one or two objectionable contractors. A man named Henry Jackson, in the employ of Mr F. Brandt at the Landing, met with a rather serious accident by

falling from the embankment near the punt on to the road below, a distance of 20 feet. The man fell on his head, and when picked np was unconscious— he was forwarded to tbe Beefton Hospital. This accident did not occur through drinking, .as the man has been a teetotaller for some months past.
