THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. MONDAY, MARCH 29, 1880.
With the object of hurrying on as much as possible the commencement of tbe promised General Government works in tbis County, and more particularly tbe bridge over tbe InaDgan hua river, the County Chairman last week communicated with the Minister of Public Works ou the matter. The answer received was that the bridge and other works bad not been over* looked since tbe Ministerial yisifc, but that everything was being done to get the works ready for tendering." This assurance taken with the fact that the appropriations for these works will not lapse before the 30th June next, may be accepted as satisfactory, though for our own part we do not quite . see how jthese appropriations can survive tbe coming session, unlep tbey are re-voted. Howev r, we have the assurance of Mr Oliver that they will, and we are content to take it at that. Steps will also be taken within the next fey daya to launch a public company to entitle the promoters to the subsidy promised, and it would be advisable that the undertaking should be got into shipr-shape form at aoyrate before the next meeting of Parliament, for if the cry of a failing revenue, which tbe Government are incessantly dinning into people's ears, means anything at all, it means that there will be precious little money available for any purpose after the next meeting of the House. No stronger, argument in favor of the project could be adduced than the splendid deep«level yield j-nsfc recorded by tbe Golden Fleece Company. The fact that stone yielding 2oz to the ton has been obtained in that mine at a depth of 500 ft goes very far to guarantee the success o f the low level scbame. This tunnel will cut the lodes at a depth of nearly 400 ft below the level at present worked by the Fleece, and should payable stone be met at such a depth, of which no reasonable doubt can be entertained, a new life would be opened up for tbe Inangahua, property of all descnp* tions would be raised considerably in value, and in short, a new and endur* ing era of prosperity would be brought home to the inhabitants. We trust then to see every possible encouragement extended to tbe scheme.
