THE LOW LEVEL TUNNEL.
(To THE EDITOE InaNGaHUA TIMKS.) Sib : Now that the proposed Low Level Tunnel Company is in a fiiir way of being floated, it may not be out of place to suggest that, seeing that tbe Government has receded so far from Us
original promise re subsidy, I think tbe question of fixing the staiting point ot the tunnel, as well as its course, should be settled by the company, quite apart from the recommendations of Mr Gordon As I understand it, Mr Gordon proposed that the level should start at a certuin height— 7o feet, I think, above tbe level of the river. Now there are tnany pracs tical men here who believed that it could be started very much lower than that, and as it is quite certain that we sball nover want to put in another tunnel, why not make this one as serviceable as possible by taking it in at the very lowest point, and in such a course as will cut all the crossing lodes at an almost square angte. I don't think that, the company should be bound in any way to follow out the ideas of Mr Gordon, unless it can be shown that they cannot be bet* tered. Hoping, now that tbe work is to be started, that practical men will come foward and give the public the benefit of their ideas. I am, Sea., Shaeeholdbe, Beefton, 3Qth March, 1880.
