FATE OF UNIVERSITY MEN IN NEW ZEALAND.

+ An interesting and instructive table aps pears in the last column of the census re* turns, giving a graphic picture of ' the ills the scholar's life assail ' in the colonies. li'lis a tabular statement showing the number of members of Universities living in New Zealand on the 3rd March, 1878, and their respective occupations. From this U would appear that there were in all 643 University men in the Colony, and in a footnote we are told that 'in addition to the above mentioned males, three females were returned as belonging to the Unicersity of New Zea» {and, two of whom were Bachelors (&ic.) pf Arts ; they were ail occupied in teaching. Ono female (a midwife) was returned •is belonging to the Andersonian University at Glasgow.' From tais it will be seen that we, in this Colony, have realised Tennyson's lines about the sweet '' girl-graduates,' of whom he sings; Whether they possess the ' golden hair ' which the poet apparently considers as inseparable from such beautiful and in* tellectual beings we are unable to say, nor are we able to state whether New Zealand may look for ' prudes as proctors, dowagers as deans,' to follow in due course. Turning again to the sterner sex, we find a curious picture revealed of the 'ups-and-downs' to which a man, who has only the learning of the schools to depend upon, is sulject in the colonies: Of course a large number of the persons referred to in the table are members of the various learned professions. For instance, 125 of them are clergymen, iv addition to three 'evangelists' and one church officer ; 105 are schoolmasters, and 102 are medical men. The lawyers only include 34 University men in their rank, but seven lawyers' clerks and one student, in addition, own allegiance to Alma Mater. Ten newspaper owners and editors, and one reporter, are noted as belonging to various Universities.
