We are told that the " internal ecoD* omy " of tbe Reefton Hospital has undergone a " rigorous, and unexpected " test, and htm not been found wanting. Of course this assertion will be accepted by the public for precisely what is worth. It is a mere bald assertion, having no surer foundation than some hurried calculations whicfe were '* roughly " made at a recent Committee meeting, and this in the absence of tbe only officer of the in* stitution competent to guide the investigation, so called. That tbe Committee only went " roughly " into tbe matter we have the statement of one of the members at tbe Annual Meeting, and upon the strength of a result so arrived at tbe public is asked to believe that the institution has been conducted upon strictly model prin» ciples, We must certainly confess to a want of appreciation for such an " argument," and must plead guilty to tbe impeachment that such logic is entirely thrown away upon us. As to the remarks in our last issue with respect to the wftrdsmao, we did not say the report that there wag hostility towards him was " silly," but that tbe secret issue of Preahaw or no Preshaw, which waa pu& to a certain class of the electors, was not only siily but decidedly false, and must have been known to be so. The result of tbe elections appears to afford our contemporary immense satisfaction, and we would be sorry to mar bis en* joyment in any way, but when we are ■asked to believe that because half-a--dozen or so hotnheaded inconsiderate persons go about the country skulldragging men in on tbe " Non Popery " cry, in order to settle the elections in a particular way, that a victory so arrived at is to be taken as a triumphant confimation of the past executive fun* tions of the Committee, we are uo» able to see it. We are unnble to see the connection, but this may arise from our inability to enter into the spirit of contests so conducted. With our contemporary it wouid rppear to be different, and the battle being fought and victory won, be whirls bis literary sbillalagh high in the air with true na'ion&l fervor, as if nothing would please him so much as for somebody to tread on the tail of bis coat. But as we have before said we are di«. posed to question the reliability of tbe verdict co pronounced, as we do not hesitate to condemn the means by which it has been brought about. It would be quite useless to seek to hide tbe real nature of tbe influence which worked tbe elections, for it is but too patent in the result. It is an unfortunate state of things for any commu* nity to be a prey to such a detestable feeling, and it ia the more humiliating because fostered and fanned by those who should be amongst the first to smother it down.
