Tbb Government; baye definitely agreed to take over tbe Maruia track from the County mi pay the con* tract amount to Mr Walker. The agreement and other documents ne* cessary to be signed in the matter have been received by tbe County ; Chairman, from tbe Minister of Pub* lie Works, and upon their return to Wellington the money will be paid over to tbe County. The Council is to be congratulated upon having come 80 safely oat of what a t one time appeared to be ft rather difficult position. Strong efforts are, we learn } now being made by tbe Amuri Conn'y to obtain a grant from , tbe Government in order to carry the track through Cannibal Gorge, into the Amuri country, and as tbe movement ia urgently backed up by Canterbury influence, and the Government realise the utility of the work, it is highly probable that we shall enjoy through communication before tbe winter is over.
