The situation is undoubtedly a grave one, and our own councillors would do w 11 to profit by the warning, short aa it ie, by refraining from entering upon new isrorks of any kind. Parliament is summoned to meet on the 28th of May, so that the Colony will not be kept Ions: in suspense ne to the exact bope there is of evading sucb an extreme course as the Government pur* pose taking. The prospect of a withdrawal of Government aid to local bodies, and tte con?fquent cessation of wr>rks, added to the absolute cer* tainfy of lonely increased Colonial taxation, is anything but a comforting ! one, and 'Yom which there seems uo possible hope of escape.
