The Government have signified their intention io discontinue al! subsidies to local bodies after the 30th June next. Tim means tbe effectual bursting up of Couuty government, on the We3t Coast at all events, and what is to become of those bodies which are not only heavily in debt, but have large prospective ]ia* bilities to meet, is nn enigma which it is not easy to solye. The situation is undoubtedly a grave one, and our own councillors would do w 11 to profit by the warning, short aa it ie, by refraining from entering upon new isrorks of any kind. Parliament is summoned to meet on the 28th of May, so that the Colony will not be kept Ions: in suspense ne to the exact bope there is of evading sucb an extreme course as the Government pur* pose taking. The prospect of a withdrawal of Government aid to local bodies, and tte con?fquent cessation of wr>rks, added to the absolute cer* tainfy of lonely increased Colonial taxation, is anything but a comforting ! one, and 'Yom which there seems uo possible hope of escape.
