THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY MONDAY, APRIL 26, 1880.

The announcement of the intended withdrawal of subsidies to County Council after the 30th of June next, has naturally been received with a great deal of dissatisfaction throughout the Colony, and the opponents of the Government have not; been sow to fan up the feeling. Unfortunately the question k one tbaJHieeds bo^very little fanning to a wa bjodp^^t|j\j| way to work to bring their ' protest under the notice of the Government, by passing the following resolution : —"That the Chairman write to the Government, protesting in the strongest terms possible against the proposed withdrawal of subsidies from local bodies, as in our opinion the magni* tude and importance of County works urgently required in opening up land for settlement, is such as to claim the continued assistance of the Government by special grants, as well as the usual £ for £on rates raised in the various counties, to enable these works

to be carried out with success ; and that Mr Johnston be writteu to, Urging him to support to the utmost of his ability the claims of this county in particular." It is to be presumed that a similar resolution will be passed by the Council here, and it may also be worth while considering the advisability of combined action on the part of the whole of the West Coast Counties. The meeting of Parlia- . ment is approaching, and as the question is certain to be fully forced upon 1 the notice of the House, care should be taken that the peculiar claims of these Counties are fully represented.
