THE MARUIA.

' (FSOM CXTE OWN COEEESPONDENT.) 1 The opening of communication be« tween Ifeefton and Maruia has already had at least oue good effect. It has induced a nuaiber of parties to fit out [ expeditions for the purpose of exploring , the back country for new goldfields. So , I „ t. „,',. . ._. ipqq „;: . v ;,,; , : -,V,. . „ •■

has been proved to be gold-bearing, and has been worked to good advantage. The cost and delay of bumping tucker from Moonlight's store, Harnpden, has, however, hitherto quite handi* capped the miner out of the country, for he could not afford to spend throe • days in each week carrying tucker, and the road, or rather track, was such that no pack horse could look at it. Now, however, that the gold-bearing belt of country is brought within a few hours ride of Reefton, and provisions can be landed almost at the door of the pros* pectors hut, men hiive some heart to set in to work. The river bank as well as all the adjacent terries, are of a most likely formation, and all who have seen the locality have no doubt that the district will eventually maintain a large population, and turn out a larsre amount of cold. I hear that two parties, with heavy supplies of provisions have started direct for the interior, and in* tend to thoroughly test the conntrv right into the mnin range. Even John Chinaman ha? paid the district a visit, and fr*m *he natflre of the locality there is little dtfubt that before long we snail have a large influx of bis countrymen. Many persons are sanguine that quartz reefs will be found in the Maruia district of a richer character than any of those yet opened in the Inans gahu* or Lyell, as some splendid specimens of quartz gold have been found along the river. There is also abundance of coal, and along the river some fine land for agriculture.
