News bas been received from Barrington diggings that the crushing of tvo tons of quartz yielded 190 ozs gold. London, May 3. The steamship Orient, with the Australian cricketers, arrived, all' well, and will play their first match against the Gentlemen of Hampshire at Southampton on the 13th instant. May 5. < General Stewart has replaced General Roberts in command' of the British forces at Cabul. A despatch from Indian Government states tbat the cost of the Afghan war i will probably be at least four million pounds over the estimate. May 6. Robert Lowe has been raised to tbe Peerage. Five hundred thousand pounds have been subscribed and tbe Meat Freezing Company will immediately commence operations After this year the Derby will be run at Gravesend, instead of at Epsom. A stone cross has been erected, by order of Queen Victoria, on the spot where tbe Prince Imperial lost his life. A centennery in memory of the Rev. W. Ellery, founder of Unitarianism, has been celebrated in Europe and America. St. James' Hall, London, was crowded with participants.
