A GERMAN PROGNOSTIC OF THE COMING EUROPEAN WAR.

Our counsel, however, would be 'to rcceira tbew alaroimg itM , ings with caution, or at any rate not to 'draw the worat conclusions therefrom, since there is realty no reason, for doing so as yet. We shall endeavor ia the fol* lowing remarks to reduce the warlike 1 rumors to their true value, leaving it to our readers to accept or reject oar conoJusions as they may see fit. If peace should be disturbed, the disturbflaee will be on the part of Russia, for tbe latter finds her »on^uest3 in Turkey menaced by the claims of England and Austria, and is alarmed for her prestige in tbe East. She may also hope, by engaging in wa*» to supply a safety valve for the revolutionary movements within her owngdp|ia;jto, |&i such (jaßf ' KusSia woMdl«|in Bfpi#4^#^f with Austria. On the sfek of tkafc power it will find ranged Germany, and pos« sibly England also { whilst France, oo the other hand, will readily support the j power that takes the field against us. Hence we have f the allied forces of ! Russia and france>, pitted against those of Germany, Austria, and (perhaps) England * , Let us compare their relative strength : i The German army contains according to tbe lists for 1879 :— 620,000 men of the active force , 551,000 men reserve forced militia, Ifn all 1,2a3,080-m'en, J of whom 114,000 ;'e#w%i together with 2560 cannon. The frontiers of the Empire are defended by thirty -three fortresses, the fleet numbers thirtyssix li«e*of- battle ships, of which twelve are ironclads of the best cohslf uctioa.
