• The District Court will tit at Eeefton on the 21st instant, and the proceedings aro likely to be lengthy as there are already three civil cases set down for hearing, besides several ap« pjicaiions under tbe Mining Companies, and Bankruptcy Acts. It is elsewhere notified by the XToder* j Secretary for Goldfielde, that a certificate of protection fpr two years bas been granted to A. S. Menteaib* on behalf of the Victory Gold Mining Company. Mr A. A. Adams announces that be will open an gventng clas* for the instruction of boys, on Monday, June: 14th. There are a great numbe| of lads in the, community who, are unable to attend the day schools, and whdse parents- will no doubt b^ glad of the opportunity thus afforded of profitably engaging tbe evening hour*. There are a large number of boys nightly rampaging the streets of tteefton whom it would be well to see disposed of with better advantage to themselves. Between 3 uiid ~4i o'clock yesterday afternoon the private cottage of Mr John Lawn, miner, Black's Point, wai discovered to be on fire,,- and almost before assistance oould arrive the entire building was in flames, The fire bad 'obtained complete bold, and those on the scene were powerless* to check Its destructive course, and the cottage and contents were wholly consumed. Mr Lawn, we believe was at work at the time of the occur* rence, and Mrs Lawn and the family had only been away from the house a few j minutes, It is supposed fast the fire orat i ginated through. tb,e ignition of some linen j wbjeh was hung to dry in frp.nt of the fife. The house and furniture were uninsured, j and as nothing whatever was saved, tbe mis: fortune is a heavy one, Great spmpathy is 'felt for the sufferers. The Art Ethibition in aid of the Church of England Fund will open to-morrow evening, for the last time. - A great irn- • prominent will be made in the arrange : ment of the exhibits, and the room will be .more brilliantly lighted. A number of new' and highly interesting exhibits have been: contributed, and as a concert will be car-f ried on concurrently, the occasion cannot fail tp attract a numeroo,s assemblage. t Tbe inhabitants of Boatman's complain bitterly, and it s?ems with justice, at tie manner in which they have bean treated ay tbe Central Board of Education, NeSaa. Some tjwe ago a memorial was drawn up by tbe Capleston School Committee, asking the Board to con'giituta Boatman's a Schjpol District under the Act Tbe petition #as signed by upward? of sixty householder! of the proposed District, .and represented mat there were fully seventy .c'^ldren in, the; locality, and no school-room ava^uble. -The Board, however, refused to take any adtion in the matter, without assigning any! reason whatever for their singular determina* -tiou. In the face of these frets the Committee have decided to appeal directjv to (he Minister of Education on the sysj?ct. It was accordingly decided at a leoent meeting of the Co.mmi|;tea to have a n|emoriaJ.tothe- Minister drawn up, setting^ forth -the complaint of the inhabitants, an^ *pray ing for the relief desired. j Th next, sitting of the Magistrate's and Warden's Courts at Reefton will be held on, the 17th ingtaot. The County Cbaiistoan yesterday telegra* plied to the representatives of the district with respect to arrears due to the Conrty under the OqarUobfe Aid gran*. The veply *as, we believe not very reassuring. Mr Brennan also urge/1 upon the members the necessity, in the debate on the proposed County o >anges, of fully setting before the House the e«ept»nal position of this County »ud the consequence? inevitable upon a with* drtiwal of subsidy. Mr James B. Keene's thirteen racebor*ps are on their way to England on board the same Transatlantic steamer. The two old horses, Amoriean Spendthrift and Lord Murphy, have each of them cost about £3 000. Lord . Murphy's career on the British Turf will be watched with interest, as he is $ purely American-bred horse. Spendthrift is the son of an imported Australian, who is himself the son of West Australian. A]l tb fl other horses aid two-year-olds, bred iniKentueky. When Mr Keene'a horses arrive" at Newmarket there will be about one hundred and fifty foreign hofies in (raining there— -Truth. Tho shocking disclosures anent New Zealand immorality Tyhich. are being made at the oreaent sessiocs of the Divorce Court afford melancholy food for the moralist. The whole of the* cases yet heard, present pitiable pictures ofj domestic infelicity, but that oi Xtdght'v. Knight, is atrocious io its brutal baseness. The first question ihat presents it self -'to the mind of any man possessed uf virtuous feeling is " Is it not a pity that sach a jyi£pr as Knight cannot be brought within the reach of the criminal law ?" The unhappy victim whom he seduoed, was only 14 years of age. She was .his ( own sfepdaughter, snd therefore should have looked to him, aboje all men, as a protector j she was of weak iltellecl, and had epileptic fits every day of hir life, sometimes b.eing attacked by three, sag comment on the vaunted perfection of our legislation that such a human fiend can escape ''unwhipt of justice*" The question? no doubt is a difficult one but we tliink tfiat it might be legislated upon with - outjr ifttany way infiiniiing on the liberty of thej 8U| ject. Had tie girl been two years younger, and of absolutely sound mind, Ktiight could have been criminally prose cofced.l But many girls of twelve are far more capable of taking care of themselves than U a ball-Imbecile girl of fourteen. The aaja of an immense pastoral property is recorded in the "Central .Australian." Bourke. It is situated in 'Northern River* ma. That paper says :— M Sir Samuel Wilson is no longer owner pf the Toora'e and Dunlop stations. Messrs McCaughey Brothers D. Wilwm have purchased Tooraie, with 120,000 sheep, and the North darling Back Block, the former comprising 1,40,000 acres and the latter 500,000 acres, fof a lump sum of £143,000. Messrs McCautjbey Brothers afld Wilson are also the purchasers of Dunlop, 800,000 acres with the sheep thereon f'f>f £145,000. A sale segregating nearly $,000,000 acre?, over a quarter of a million of sheep, and purchase money totting' up tq nearly £300,000, is not to be chronicled every dftv. 1 * ' " Xha Judge of the Cheltenham County Court recently decided that, in order to make an innkeeper liable for property lost, the traveller must: prove not only' that it came into the oars of the inkeeper or bis servants, But that it was known to them at the same time to whom the property belonged. f A Russian Nihilist in England has offered the following plea for the justice of the at.tempted asssassination of the Czar : — " English journals," writes the Russian, '^are imaking a mighty to-do about the ' atrocious attempt on the Czar. They cry out because we have striven to slay the good Alexander. Let us see how logical they are. *A<man ■named Paine is being tried for hii life for having given a woman brandj in order that she might drink herself to death j at least, •this is what is a'leged of him, Should be be 'condemnod, not one of them will have a word of pity, and hia condemnation will certainly not be called ' atrocious.' 78ow, in 1862 a powerful teetotal movement began in Kussig, and as every solemn pledge i 3 taken— -according t> custD-n- in church, the priesj^ w*»reobliged to assist the community. new ' disease * spread very rapidly and tbo^effects on the revenue, were becoming apparent.. Whereupon the Czar issued a ukase commanding the dissolution of tho Sodiety of Abstainer?, and the apostlas of temperance were forced either* to keep absolute si^enon or to work secretly. In one case a singlef woman i* the victim j in the other case eighty millions of our countrymen are refused »11 re •■■ lease from the national vice of drnnkeness roul. The English writers condemn Paine and called the Cz-ir blessed, although the Iftlter lias a hundred opiates on his. shoulders equal to the crime of crushing the temperance movement." The owners of American petroleum deposits will before lon» have to encounter a con9'derabk amount of opposition jn view of the discoveries cf this valuable oil on the Continent and especially in Hanover and ilussia. The beds in the latter country are comparatively boundless, extending for a distance of 1500 miles along the Caucasus range, from the Caspian to the Black Sea. At the present time, however, there are but two districts in this large nrea where any systematic efforts are being made to obtain the petroleum. One is in the valtey o f the jguban river (which flows into the black Sea), where two wells have been sunk by a French company under the superintendence of an Amercan manager. This oompany has a refinery at Tatnan, The other and n»ost productive district is near Baku, on the Caspian Sea. Many wells have been eunk here to tho depth of 300 feet, having a daily yield of 28,000 barrels of ora<\.. petroleum. An extraordinary amount of sa.*i flows out with the oi!, and is heaped up near the orifice a f the wells iv banks a,t lojet 30 feet high.
