THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. MONDAY, JUNE 14, 1880.
The Chnroh oi England Art Exhibition was nqt bo largely attended on Saturday evening as on the opening night, but the weather waa adverse, and no doubt kept many from attending. Wi are glad to leant that upon the whole the -exhibition has been fairly »ycceasful 4 although the gross receipts were not at all oornmensurate with the amount of time and^y attention bestowed. This may no doubt be attributed in great part to the email entrance fee fixed. 1 We understand that the detail survey of i the Low Level Tunnel has been completed from the starting point as far as the Golden I Fleece lease, and the Government survey staff start this morning to work the level through to tbe Left-hand Branch. The following half-yearly meetings of Reiftoa mining companies will be held during the current month, at Mr Brennan's office :— Oriental Company, Monday, 21st June, at 7 p.m.j Hopeful Company, Tuesday. 22nd June, at 7 p.m. ; Welcome Company, 28th June, at 7 p.m.; Golden Treasurer Com* pany, Tuesday, 29ih June, at7p.ro.; Fiery Cross Extended Company, Wednesday, 30th June, at 4 p.m. The basin ess to be dea t with in each case is the reception of direct tore' report and balance-sheet, and the election of directors. The tender of Saunders and pgrty has been accepted by the directors of the"Nil Desperandnm Company for leasing the mine on tribute. Tbe period for which the tribute has been taken is two years and three months. The tributors commence operations at once. The Keep»it«Dark Company invite tenders for sinking 150 ft of main shaft. The shaft will start contiguous to the tunnel mouth, and is an important undertaking aa far as concerns the future working of the mine, as it will enable the reef to be out at a depth which will give years' of work for the battery, and this long before the stone in the present working levels is exhausted. The inhabitants of the Inangahua were on Saturday night treated to wbat Artemus Ward wo^ld term some '• exhilarating sleet." and " bracing snow." The fall was," however a very light one, and quickly melted. The night air remained piercingly cold, and blue noses became very fashionable. We remind those interested that tenders for the construction of the Inangahua bridge close to-day. A meeting of the provisional directors of the Low Level Tunnel Company will, wa believe, be held early in the present, week for the purpose of allotting the shares, and taking ihe necessary steps to incorporate the company. We need hardly point out to all classes of business people in the community the importance of assisting in floating the venture at the earliest possible daw, for it must be apparent that if the financial proposals of the Government are carried into law, and County subsidies withdrawn, there will follow an immediate and complete cesBiition of all form of pnblic exppnditure in the district, the effect of which cannot but seriously intensify the current depression, and to a great extent affect the value of pro* perty. A young man named Elmer S verance Of Princeton, Miunesot<*, bet one of his companions $ quarter that he could place a dipper of cold water on the stove and hold his finger in the dipper until the. water began to boij. The wager waa acoepted Severance held his finger in the dipper quiet awhile but was obliged to withdraw it before the water had reached a boiling pitch . hence he lost his bet. On examination it was found that the fingrr was eompletly cooked. The probubility is that that the finger will have to be amputated. j 'Ihe Kansas City Times tells of c Western
man who walked 20 miles expecting to hear Queen Tictoria sing in Her Majesty's Opera Troupe. The proposed change of making theChristohurch office of the Union S.B. «ompaDy the head oflice for the pore' and tae city, has been' carried into effect, ' The company however still retain an office at Lyttelton, and have established 'telephonic communication between the two — Ohristchuroh Press. In the course of his speech at Auckland, Mr Header Wood said he was perfectly free now- his agreement was only to support the Hall Government for last session. He would be a blind follower of no man. It is not often, says the Wellington Times, that we hear of a man having a piece of wood two inches long extracted from one of his eyes, yet such an operation has lately been performed at the general hospital here, with the best possible results. A man named Byrne was blasting logs with dynamite near Napier, about eight months ago, when he received a blow on the eye from one of the splinters, and as the part was very sore he had to seek medical aid. There was a wound under the eye-ball, which soon healed up under treatment, the only result of the accident being that the eye was turned j I slightly to one side. About a month ago, as i I we are informed, the wound broke out again, and the man being in Wellington, consulted Dr. Gillon upon the subject. That gentleman noticed something sticking out on the wound and upon examination found it was the end of a splinter. The foreign subject was extracted and proved to be, as stated, above two inches in length, its breadth being half an inch. It had penetrated below the eyeball without in any way injuring the latter, and bad taken a course towards the ear, planting slightly downwards. Not only is the patient getting on well but His eye has now recovered its proper position. Dr Gillon has the splinter preserved at the hospital. , Sir A Guinness. Sir S. Palk, SirJ. Guest Mr Bailie Cochrane, and Lord Edward Hill Trevor, have received peerages, Lord Skelmersda'e and Lord Soner have received earldom?. Henry Alliof, of HindUp-hall, Worcester, has been created a baronet. Algernon Barilwick, editor and propriotor of the Morning Post, has been knfghfced. Pope Hennessy, Governor of Hong Kong has been appointed Knight Commander of St Michael and St George. At a meeting of the Inveroargill Reform Association it was resolved to send the following address to Gladstone Arora this remote dependency of British Empire " Mem « bers of the Invercargill Liberal Leform As« soeiation desire to convey their congratulations on the success of the Liberal Cause in the Parent Country. They regard it as the opening of a new era of wise and beneficient Legislation, of peaceful foreign policy, prosperity to commerce." If we are to believe the 8. F. News Letter, the Queen city of the Pacific is overran with quacks, and has about the most rascally lot of medicos in the world preying upon its in« habitants. The evil is so great that the newly-elected Assembly is setting itself to legislate on the subject, and really if the following is not a gross exaggeration of fact, remedial measures would seem to be sorely required : — " The druggist not only puffs the physician, but levies largess for him in the shape of commissions, and the doctor, in his turn,' favors the druggist and himself at the same time, by sending his prescriptions to a particular drug store. The whole business is a bad and shameful one, that robs the patient, degrades the physician, and too often constitutes the druggist a robber of the most essential qualities of the medicine he makes up. It is an imposition upon the patients, who are thus forced to pay a second fee to the doctor, and for no consideration. It degrades the phypciian, because it is an underhand triok, unworthy of an educated gentleman. It often constitutes druggists thieves in this, that they are tempted to put in only one half or one -third of the more costly drugs presscribed, thus, of course, neutralising the physicians^ combinations, and in many cases, doubtless, depriving the medicine of its benefical effects. The fact is that the drugs business, at the best, is one in which er.torionate charges, that are out of all proportion to the value of the thing sold, are maintained. When commissions varying from 50 to 150 per cent are added the thing becomes less endurable than highway robbery. A bill has been introduced into the Assembly to cure this monstrous system, [t ought to pass. At one time it was pretty occurately within our knowledge what commissions were allowed by certain druggists to particular physicians. Some druggists gave any commission, it was a matter of indifference to them, as they added it to the erst of the preccription. Many tricks were availed of as means to ensure the prescription reaching the right dru?»ist. Sometimes they were put in sealed and ad - dres=ed envelopes ; at other tiroes they were so wifrten that only one man could read them." At a meeting in the Mansion House, London, en the 29th instant, in support of an Arctic expedition, described as the British Canadian expedition, under the command of Captain John Cheyse, of the Royal Navy, a central committee was appointed of thirty members, including Sir Charles Dilke and five other members of Parliament. L^rd Derby contributes £100. The estimated cost of the expedition ia £30,000 to be raised by voluntary contributions. Commander Cheyse saw the Minister of Finance in Canada, and suggested that the Dominion should provide the money if the English Government would not. It is intended to ascertain by balooning which of the two channels is most open. In the first weets of June three baloons are to leave the ships, carrying provisions and are expected to reach the North Pole in twentyfour or thirty hours, the party returning to the ship partly by balloon and partly in Klertees. A letter from Lord Bury strongly opposes the scheme as unprofitable and for those engaged in it suicidal.
