Mr Greenwood has resigned the editorship of the Pall Mall Gazette. This is one of the consequences of the late elec tions. The paper bas passed to a new proprietor. In his valedictory editorial lie made a savage .Hack on the new ad" ministration. lie gave his reasons at lenglb in the Standard for quitting tbe Gazette. He writes: We do not pro* pose to allow 'our independent paper to be extinguished. Its spirit rides in us, and will soon reappear in a new shape." Greenwood within forty-eight hours after his retirement received offers exceeding 100.0UO dollars to establish a uevr journal. At the Eoyal Academy banquet, held on tbe 30th A pril, the Prince of Wales, Gladstone, and Bret Harte were among the guests. The Prince, in replying to the • Royal Family,' said the Duke of Edinburgh bad been doing good work in Ireland, and be also complimented tbe people as kindly a.d gonerou.. Gladstone replied to ' Her Majesty's Minister?,' and Bret Harte's response to 'Science and Literature' was loudly cheered. Hartman, the Russian Nihilists, is in America, and is being interviewed by New York reporters. It is proposed to organise a joint commission, composed of representatives from England and America, to ' reform ' the orthography of the English language, ly tbe elimination of all silent letters. A Sunday law is being so vigorously enforced in Louisville city that newspaper offices are shut up, and trackmen, firemen and telegraph operators are re strained for the time from active service. The object is to make tbe enactment odious. Tbe marriage of the Princess of Hanover to bor father's secretary has caused a good deal of sensation, The gambling rooms at Monte Carto were destroyed by an explosion of dynimite placed i.i the mantlepice. The place was crowded with visitors at the time, but no one was hurt. The Island of Jamaica is suffering from draught. Pastures aro dry, and the cattle are driven from place to place in s.arck of water in the high*, lands. Water is sold at 3 I per gallon, and has to be carried for miles on the heads of the purchasers. An epidemic is -raging among cattle on the estates and pastures on tbe north side, and many have died, while a succession of fires destroyed cornfields and grass land. The Peruvians have disembarked a cargo of arms at Chera near Molendn, and captured the Chilian seam l.uneb Decurenda, at Jokopoto, Further advices say the transport Aroya bas jnst returned to Callao, after repeating the exploits of the L. Union. She ran pa.t tbe Chillian fleet in the nigh*. visited Jokopoto, destroyed some launches and captured a small steamer. At one time she was fighting tbe enemy from one side and disci. arging munitions of war from the other. It is considered a very brilliant affair.
