RANFT -STREET ROAD.

♦ [TO THE EDITOB ISANGAHITA TIIIKS.] Sie,^ Doubtless these arc Lard times for newspapers and their correspondents, therefore, even such a subject as the metalling of a few chains of a street must '■ c interesting, and I am of an opinion that you should have your share of the KnnfKstreet contract. A gentlemen of" Ilie salt-6sh genius, nii-knamed" Stormy," has enlightened the public, through the Inangnhua Herald, of the fact that he tendered for the forming of that street, and that he would have bepn £5 lower had lie known that a certain culvert would not have been put in that was in the specifications. Mr " Stormy V ten« der was. I believe, £52 10s. and £5 that he allowed for a culvert from that amount would leave £47 10s ; our tender was £31, so that " Stormy " evidently was not in the running. The contract was for 7| chains, including the culrert "- which was not put in." Now, we formed 8J chains of road and much against our wish, but we considered it better <o accept our position. It arose in this way, the Engineer came one day and stated that it was not likely that the side drain over which the culvert was to have been placed would ever have any water in it, and instructed us to fill the drain in instead, and in lieu of the culvert we were to extend the street a short distance. Now, at the time we considered it rather too much to do. as the value we placed upon this culvert was 25* , and would much like (o have 100 such to construct at that prree. Now, taking " Stormy 's " price for the work, £7 per chain, the three* quarter of a chain we made was rather much work in lieu of the culvert, and we are still of that opinion ; but " Stormy " should take one turn at contracting under the Engineer, and we are of an opinion that he would have a different view of matters. — I am, &c, EtTTLER AND M'InEBNEY.
