We see by the Christchurch Press of a re* cent dale that Mr A. D. Bayfeild ha. been offerad and Haß accepted the appointment of Inspector and Special Agent for New Zealand of the National Mutual life Awociation of Australasia. The Grey road from Reefton to the boundary of the Grey Oonnty, at the Junction, is now in excellent order, and should stand well without maintenance for twelve months. There is very little traffio on the road at the present time, and we see no reason to expect any large increase. The wide tiers in om by the carriers hare had the effects smoothing away the rots, which together with the addition made in places to the width of the road, adds yery much to tbe oomfort of travelling. Fresh bread is being delivered daily on Totara Flat and the Grey Junction at 9d per 41b loaf. The competition among the Ahaura and Totara Flat bakers is said to be very keen. We are glad to be able to say ihat the patient Maher. who was so .frightfully injured at Boatman's on Monday last, is pro* greasing very favorably. Tbe marriage of Mr Litchfield, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Greymouth, with the eldest daughter of Mr W. J. Coats, was celebrated at Greymouth with great eclat. The marriage ceremony was very im* posing. The weddingscake was a perfeot master -piece of oonfeotionery, and stood up« wa ds of five feet high. Throughout the day tbe whole of the shipping in port, as well as tbe chief business establishments of the town, were gaily decorated with bunting, in honor of the occasion. Mr Brennan announces a sale by auction of tho property known as '• Winford Park," Boatmau's together with valuable houae and land property in Capleston. The sale will take place on Wednesday next. Mr M'Gaffin also announces a sale by auction on next Friday, of the premises at present occupied by Mr J. G. Heslop. There cannot be many idle men about the .Inangahua, if one was to judge from the fact (bat it has been found necessary to extend - the time for accepting tenders for repairs to the suspension bridge ovtr the Left-hand Branch, until Saturday next. Only one tender was sent in for the work. It would appear that a bungle was made by the Government engineers of tbe day in tbe erection of the bridge over the Big Grey, at the Junction. After the piles for the structure had been driven, a flood of rather more than ordinary volume came down the river, and came near frightening the wits out of tbe department, as the water rose to the level of the floor of the bridge as originally designed. It was then decided to raise so much of the floor as had not been already permanently laid, and this happened to be the middle section, which was accordingly raised a foot. We do not wish to infer that the alteration has in any way impared the stability of the structure i for, on the contrary, there is no doubt it was a very wise precaution to take, .as nothing short of 'a direct breach of the " Arc of the Covenant " oan now endanger the bridge. There is, however, this draw«back, tbat tbe floor of the structure presents something of the appearance of a dromedary's back-bone,— or a dog's hind leg. Had the original design made adequate provision for the possibilities of the situation, there would, of course, have been no need to introduoe the dromedary feature. The moral deduoible from all this is, that care should be taken to prevent the promiscuous introduction of the quadrupedal representation before namsd into the Inangahua bridge.
