' ♦ ■ PER ALBION. Invebcabgiljl., August 2. Melbourne, July 27, On Thursday, in Parliament, Berry notified a want of confidence motion. Service objected to the same as being entirely ont of order before the Governor's speech was delivered. He accordingly appealed to the Speaker, who on Friday delivered bis ruling in writing that tho motion was quite receivable, whereupon Service said tbat while he and his colleagues would bow to the decision, yet they felt so strongly on the subject that they could not countenance subsequent proceedings. The Government members theu left the House en bloo, Mr Wrixon, member of the Opposition, also protested against this breach of the Constitution Act, and quitted the Chamber.* O'Shnn'assy said nothing, and Berry submitted the motion without speech, ' That the House take the earliest opportunity of informing His Excellency
that his Advisers do not possess the eon fidence of Parliament.' Major Smith seconded tho motion, which was carried without division. Ihe Hous^ then adjourned till Tuesday, In the Opera House a tragic occurrence took place. A yonng Irishman named Greer, jast arrived ia Melbourne shot bis wife and a Frenchman named Soudry, a member of the French Com" mission for the Exhibition! It appears that Soudry voyaged to Melbourne in the s.s. Garonne with Greer and wife. He obtained an intimacy with the latter, who ultimately became infatunted with Soudry. This continued in Melbourne, where^the wife ultimately confessed her impropriety with Soudry to an. agent employed by Greer. The latter took his wife to the Opera House, and returning after a short absence from tho theatre saw Soudry talking to his wife, whereupon he shot both, and then himself. Greer is not expected to recover, but the others are. Bervice informed the Assembly that the new Government" would require a million sterling for the service of the current year. 1 Up to last nightf the;eforts^for coalition between Berry and O'Shanassy were unsuccessful. The Cabinet yesterday resolved to adhere to its previous resolution. Messrs Zincke and Officer will move tbe address in reply to-day. he Opposition will probably move an amendment, in which reference will be made to Friday's no confidence motion, Mr and Mrs Greer are progressing favourably. The husband's case is still very serious* Mrs Greer asked leave yesterday to write to Soudry, but was refused. She manifests great interest in Soudry's case, but scarcely any in her husband,, whom she does not wish to see. There was a great crowd at the Police Court yesterday in hopes of seeing Kelly, but were disappointed, as Kelly was remanded for a week. A Ministerial caucus on the 21st approved of the conduct of the Ministry to meet Parliament before resigning. An Opposition caucus . tho same day res solved to support Lalor for the Speakership. Objections were stated to tbe Ministry retaining office, and the meeting was determined to force the want of con* fidence motion at the opening ot Parlia*ment. Neither O'Shanassy norGaunson attended. Berry and O'Shana-sv had an intern view in the Parliament House. The latter indicated that if he joined Berry it would be upon tbe understanding that the claims of the Caeholics in reference to the Education Act should be cons sidered at an early date* Berry said the Liberals could not make suoh concession, nor accept O'Shanassy' s position inthe Ministry otherwise than secondary to the interests of Parliament. At tho opening of Parliament 24S members were sworn in, the absentees being Gaunson and Gibb. While Lalor was being elected Speaker, Bent caused some sensation by protesting. On the ground that Lalor was a rebel to the, Crown and had been drunk on the floor of the House. -Service following, disavowed for himself and colleagues Bent's remarks, saying the circumstances alluded to were of a very old'date. Berry notified a vote of want of confidence motion for Friday, bnt Service and O'Shanassy maintained that Berry was acting uucon* stitutionall] by so doing, as no business shonld be done before Parliament was formally opened by the Governor, which was announced for Tuesday, 26th. Sera vice stated his reason for reoipocating (?) was the necessity of obtaining suplies for the incoming Government, and the wish of the present Ministry col" leotively to meet adverse motions. A heated and undignified discussion followed the motion, lasting several hours; Ultimately the motion for adjournment (0 Friday was carried. The Ministry resolved not to take part in the discussion on Friday nor resign before Tuesday. There is muoh speculation as to the " personnel " of the new Ministry! but it is considered pretty sure that Woods and Longmore will be omitted, _ i
