THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. WEDNESDAY, AUGUSTS, 1880.

The Public Works Statement mayhave taken a long time to hatch out, but i% certainly the most disappointing State paper we have yet come across. The mountain bas in fact brought forth a veritable mouse, and why on earth there should have been so much straining and delay in its production, we are utterly at a loss to comprehend. There is hardly a fact contained in the wide sea of platitude that has not been known to the House and the country for months past, and as for the rest, it is either a leaden record of things done and left undone, or a tissue of wearying generalities Upon the important question of administration which a Ministerial State* raent of the kind should of necessity touch, there is absolutely no information whatever ; in short, the Statement is remarkable but for one thing, and that is as showing tc a demonstration how little can be said in each a vast number of words. It is badly to be wondered then that the Statement should nave given ," general dissatisfaction," and that the debate upon it is likely to be " fierce, angry and protraded." Whether the Statement has been purposely muddled, or its barrenness is due to the short-coming of the Minister, must remain for speculation, but in either case the position is hardly a favorable one for the Government, and cannot but be regretted by their supporters. .
