[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] [PER P1U589 ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, August 16. It is stated that several parties are gold digging at Terpwliiti, a^out 10 miles from here, and, although they are without proper sluicing appliances, are making fair wages. Official information received from Lake Mapourika diggings recommends that the rush should be discouraged, aa it is being overdone, as it is a matter of time to got at the gold— either deep sinking or tunnelling beinsj necessary — ■ men without means will fiud themselves in difficulties.
Negotiations- sh<u!J be on the rva of completion for .the purchase of the New Town Kirk and Manse adjoining (Dr Wallis, M.F.R.) for £15,0C0, by the Roman Catholics' for Father Sullivan arid oiher "Benedi-tine priests expected to ar« rice shortly. There is a rumor in the lobMes thot Sir Arthur Gordon may not he Governor of the colony after all, as hia politics arc diametrically opposed to those of the present; Government, and his phib Maori proclivities would probably thwart the proposed policj of the Natiro Department. •
