[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] [PBB PBKSB ASSOCIATION.] generalassembly. » Wrwington, August 18. Mr Eeid asked if, in rednciog the rote for education, allowance had beeo made for the four mouths of the year which ! hid already expired ; also, if any pro* vision had been made for notice being given by the Boards to their teachers before the redaction in salaries are made. Mr Bolleston replied thnt it was under* stood lhat the reduction in the Education Department would take effect from the ldt of this month, as in the other branches of the public service, and the Boards hare been asked and have consented to co*operate with the Government accord* ingly. Provision will have to be made on the Supplementary Estimates to cover the amount already paid to the Boards for four months. No special provision had been made by Government for keep* j ing up teachers salaries at the old rate until notice had been given of the reducx Hon. It is presumed this will take effect as in the case of the Civil Service. Mr JBarron asked whether they have taken, or prrpose to take, any steps to give effect to the recommendation of the Civil Service Commissioners in the direo tion of reducing the- present engineering staff of the Colony. Mr Oliver replied that the stuff had been already reduced, and still further reductions would be made. On the motion of Mr Oliver, the Public Works Bill was introduced, read a first time, and the second reading ordered for Friday. '. Replying to Mr Barron, Mr Oliver said an opportunity had been afforded to Mr Armstrong, locomotive engineer of the southern railways, io rebut the charges brought a gainat him by the Civil Service Commissioner*, He (Mr Arm* strong) had got notice that his services would be dispensed with. The principal reason was that he had not been a trained engineer, bnt a carpenter, and it was on that account he had got notioe of dis* missal. On the motion for going into Commit* tee of Supply, Mr Speight drew attention to the item on the Estimates— arrears of pension, £1433. He was led io understand this was a claim made by the Hon. Dr. Fallen. He would move that the matter of arrears of the pension claimed by Dr. Pollen be referred to ibe Public Accounts Committee to report upon circumstances under which the claim is made. The motion was pot and carried. Mr Pyke moved as an amendment on the original question, that m the opinion of this House the reduction of ten per cent should not apply to salaries of £200 per annum and under. On being put, this amendment was negatived by 41 to 32.
