Intell:gence lias been received from Afghanistan that a large bo !y of ParUians attacked the British garison at Kachmadan, but were repulsed, pursued, and severe loss inflicted upon them. August 18. 1 Farther information to hand states ! that Ayoub Khan has commenced boms 1 barding Candahar w and that the British 1 forces are acting on the defensive. News has come to hand that the citadel at Oandahar is inyested on three sides by Ayoub Khan's army. General Stewart reports he has reached Gundamuk with the British force?, which was left at Cabul at General Robert's departure for Candahar, and the evacuation of Cabul is now complete. London, August 17. In the House of Commons tosday, the Marquis of Hartington, Secretary of State for India, in submitting the Indian Budget, said that increased taxation was proposed to the extent of £1,800.000. He also said that no definite proposal would be submitted by the British Government to aid Indian finance until the suspension of hostilities in Afghanistan. In the House of Commons to-day, Foster, Chief Secretary for Ireland de» nounced the wickedness and cowardice of Dillon's recent seditious speech at Kildare, and said the Government had no intention of prosecuting him. Report was current to*day that two barrels of gunpowder had been found in a railway tunnel under Cork Barracks, but, on inquiry, the whole thing proved to be a hoax. The American harvest prospects are reported to be favorablp, and the crop is estimated at 500,000,000 bushels. August 19. Mr W. E. Foster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, suddenly started for Ireland. His mission, howt ver, is at present unknown. 19. It now transpires that Mr Foster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, has gone to that ' country with the olject of enquiring whether coercive measures are neces* sary for the suppression of the disorder now prevailing there. It is ennouuced that Mr Gladstone will proceed to Italy and on to Madeira in a fortnight's time for change of air. Beelin, 19. Serious storms and floods in Prussia have caused great damage to a large exs tent, and destroyed the growing crops. Calcutta. 19. A report has come to hand that Ayoub Khan has sent a strong force to attack 1 the Sherpur gate of the citadel at Canda bar, and heavy firing between British troops and the enemy was maintained from morning to evening. The British loss is said to have been trifling. Melbouenr, 13. Bowman, member for Maryborough, made a speech last night, in the course of which he denounced Mr Williams member for Mandurang, as a political traitor. All the Ministers have been re-elected, BftEry and Vale by small majorities, and Rieltfcrdson and Williams by large majori- '^ Captain Payne, harbormaster, who was recently suspended, has been reinstated.
