THE LYELL.
THE SEPARATION, QCESTIOF, (From an occasional Correspondent.) A very large aDd influential meeting of the ratepayers took place at the Corns mercial Hotel, Lyell, on Saturday, 25th instant, to confer with a deputation from tbe Hampden ratepayers, and to take into consideration the best means of obtains ing seperacion from tbe Inangahua and Buller Counties, The meeting opened at 8 o'clock in the evenine, and the principal inhabitants of both Ridings were present. Mr John Fennell was voted to the chair. The Chairman laid before the meeting the ohject for wbich ifc bad been called, and hoped tbat every ratepayer present would express his opinion as to the best mode of obtaining what they had a right to, namely, their fair share of tbe County's revenue. He thought that the Lyell and 1 Hampden were companions in misiforluce f inasmuch as they put a good share of money into the public purse and got very little out of it, and ifc was his opinion tbat if tbe Lyell was seperated from the Buller the Lyell people would be better of, and as things looked at present, the Lyell would be giving more money to tbe public purse in future tban it bad bilbeito, but it bad no guarantee that it would get any more out cf it. Mr G. Moonlight thought that tbe Lyell and Hampden would make one of tbe nicest little Counties on the coast. He said we do not come begging for you to take us, and if we f?o como, we vvill not come hard up— certainly, we have got no Alpines or any of tbose big things you bave here, but we possess tbo best farming country in tbe two Counties, and also 'acres of unopened country in tbe Mataki* biki, Manuai and Glenroy. He -stated that there had been more money spent in the Matakitaki tbis year bringing in water.xraces tban for sixteen years previously. Mr Metcalfe thought thafc if the Lyell people did not make an effort to get their rights this time they desevred no better than what they were getting. He had several times advocated separation. Tbe following resolutions were ear» ried unanimously : — Moved by Mr Metcalf, and seconded by Mr J. Hart, tbat the Lyell desires to be separated from tbe Buller County. Prof;*:, ad by Mr Metcalf', and seconded by Mr M'Coy, tbat the following gentlemen be appointed a committed !*? deal with the matter: — Messrs Fennell, Ryan, Anderson, Carrol, Toick, Inglis, Byrne, Metcalfe, and Hart. Mr Ryan would like to know how much Hampden would bring if it came to the Lyell. Mr Moonlight thought it would have as much as the Lyell, but bo said he thought ' tbe question premature, as neither Hampden or tbe Lyell bas yet got separation, and be did not know of any buy by wbicb a man could marry I another man's wife while tbe man was alive, without her first getting divorced from the husband Several otber gentlemen having nd« dressed Ibe meeting, a vote of thanks to tbe chair closed the proceedings. The Pit. ent Member. Lyell, September 26th, 1880.
