♦ Mr Grant of Dunedin lias ptiblnhed a pnmphlet entitled. "Twenty-five years in Danedin." "Neither Danedin, nor perbaps any other city (says the writer), is ever likely to see another man ot my stamp. I hope, devoutly and sincerely, that Almighty God w>'ll never send forth another man of genius to be slowly murdered for the utterances of the very truth roost pure. Genius is too sacred a treasure, and too cosily a gift to be the scorn of fools and the victim of an avari* cious world." K A telegram from Atlantic City (New Jersey) dated August Htb, says :— " At half-fast six o'clock this evening the second section of the excursion train which left at six o'clock ran into the first section, telescoping the rear car, killing' Iwo persons and injuring about twentyfive. The other excursion train consisted of twenty-six cars, sixteen in the first and ten in the second. All the cars of the Grst section had passed the switch ex-< cept two, when the second section came thundering on behind. The engineer of the latter section whistled " do^vn brakes " as be approached the switch, but when the brakes were applied they failed to work owing to the wet. and the rear locomotive crashed into the last car of the first section, causing a fearful wreck. The cylinder heads were forced open, and dense clouds of steam poured through the car, scalding nearly every passenger in it. The crowded cars were »peeufy emptied, and every effort effort was made to aid the wounded." A telegram dated Au« gust 12th says the number of deaths thus r ar caused by the accident is fifteen, and two more are expected.
