| There is snobbery in high places. At the Guards' subscription ball in "Wel- : liugton. Captain St. John, A.D.C., was on invitaot. In one of the sets in which he stood up, one of tbe ends were vacant. A Civil Servant trotted out the wife of a respectable- Licensed Victualler and filled the breach. Captain St John, however, crossed over and whispered ' You are not in our set,' and the Civil Servant and publican's wife had to seek wore congenial company. But that C.S. was wrath. He holds tbe Queen's commission aud has rendered good service to his country.
