DEATH OF MR H.H . STAFFORD
Forsoma considerable time past Mr E. U. Stafford bad been suffering from a most painful disease— cancer in the tongue — and through this fearful malady is generally looked upon as hopeless. Mr Sfcafiord's raadicul adviaer did not lose confidence, and under his treatment considerable amelioration took place and hopes were left that the sufferer would ultimately recover. On Saturday last, however; Mr Stafford was seized by a fit, and on the remedies administered proving of some avail, he was found to be in a very prostrate condition, Dur* ing the night, we understand, he had a second attack, and that before Dr Monckton could be in attendance he pawed away. Mr Stafford by his geniality was a general favorite ;he came to Nelson, we believe, about; the , year 1853 and for some years took a keen interest in turf matters, being at all times a tbroush sportsman. Uulike his brother, Sir W. E Stafford, be meddled not with politics at all } events until the last election, when he was a candidate for the seat which the late Mr A. Richmond secured Mr Stafford will long be missed, whilst for his widow and family the upmost sympathy will be felt. — Nelson Colonist.
