[from oub otv\v cobsespondent.] London, January 19. Owing to recent heavy fa)l9 of snow, (he Thames has risen several feet, end has overflowed its banks. Fully one hundred barges have been sunk, and great damage been done to stores and other establishments near the river. The total loss of proper'y is estimated at fully two millions sterling. January 23. The race between Hanlan and Lay* cock again cannot be rowed to-day, as arranged, The Thames is still covered wi k large masses of floating ice, and the traffic on the river is almost entirely suspended. January 2-1. The cold weather, which has pre« vailed for some time past, is now moderating, and a general thaw is taking place. The Thames is rapidly becoming clear of ice.
Fresh news has come to hand from Central Asia, regarding the war between the Eussians and the Teke Turkomans. The former, under cover of bombardment, carried the Turko* man's positions close to Greok Tepe, and afterwards made a desperate assault on the trenches, but were heavily repulsed by the Tekes. The fighting on both sides was most severe.
Cape Town. January 24 Sir Hercules Robinson has arrived here to assume his position as Governor of the Cape Colony. Melbourne, Jan. 22. The two day's walking match for £50, between Baker, and Swan of New Zealand was concluded to-night. Baker completed 103£ miies, and Swan, 100 and two hips. The latter collapsed in the ladt mile. Jan. 24 'ihe Argu<* to-day announces ihe death in London, of Mr Richard Black* wood, of the firm of Mc-Alechan Blackwood ond Co.
Tbe Aagus also announces that Messrs Money and Wigram's steam* ship Norfolk, will aga n proceed from London to New Zealand direct making LjtteL'ton her destination.
