MURRAY CREEK.

LOW LEVEL TUNNEL. Thttbsday, February 3 Tbe directors of the Low Level Tunnel Company, held their regular meeting at Mr Wise's office, on Wednesday, evening. It was reported that tbe contractors liad now driven 123 ft of the tunnel, and considering that this has been done in two months', very good progress has been made. Tenuers were open for the sup ply of iron rails for tbe ensuing twelve months, when that of Mr B; Oxley, at £20 5s per ton. proved to be the lowest and was accepted. The directors intend, on the completion of the present contract, which is for 250 ft. to invite tenders for the driving of 4000 ft in one contract. This will be a step in tbe right direction, as the certainty of more extensive operations will induce contractors to import modern appliances for rock-boring an 4 contingent machinery, to enaMe the work to be prosecuted with greater speed and at a cheaper rate. In fßct, thig will be a condition upon which the extended contract will have to be completed, for as the directors fully recognise the advantages of employing machinery qn an extensive undertaking like the one in question. In the first instance, it was perhaps judicious to commence the tunnel by a con* tract for a short distance, but as a good start has now been made, the work should be pushed on with all the vigor which capital can command.
