PHOENIX COMPANY.
The extension of the low level tunnel in the Phoenix mine has been progressing satisfactorily, considering the amount of water which has somewhat retarded pro* gress. and which his necessitated the timbering of the latter portion of the innnel, as the ground showed signs of weakness. The timbering occupied ten days, and driving has again been resumed. Some leaders are now showing in the face, and the influx of water is increas* ing, which is a sure sign of the vicinity of the reef, which is expected to be met with at any moment. The survey made before the commencement of the work would make the reef yet distant about 20ft, but the underlay then taken as a basis for calculation might have altered. The stone now looked for is the same from which the company some years since obtained such splend ; d crushings. and the quality of the stone is likely to be maintained at the greater depth.
