THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. MONDAY, MARCH 7, 1881.
The Hokitika and Greymouth papers are greatly exercised just now over * the proposal to start a new daily in the latter town, and it is rather amusing to watoh tbe disinterested efforts tbat are being made to throw a wet blanket on the project. The West Coast Times, which has in reality en* joyed a monopoly of Hokitika for near eight years, is. naturally enough, anxious tbat its undisputed reign should continue, and therefore imprpyeg tbe > shining hour by saying one word for ; the Grey River Argus, and two for itself, by pointing out in plausible terms the awful difficulties that lie M tbe path of those who start papers in opposition to " old established "jour-* nals. The Hokitika, £&r follows with a jeremiade on tbfe* same * street, but its object in^fecrying tbe venture is not so »ppardnfc, and roust therefore be ' takfh'a%ja><ou)tely philanthropic emanab ,tion. TfiQ%|guß, of copise, reprodu" \ ces^lf tfi^ie*lugubrious premonitions, boJ^TOlf leaves the Bubjeet severely ajene. Wjietjier there is or is not ropm, for another morning paper in yp-reymouth, we shall not venture to pronounce, because we do not believe Wpffi our opinion one way or the other more efficacious in in» j flaehcing -the determination of the promoters than that of any of our contemporaries. It is go easy matter for one newspaper in any community to satisfy all shades of opinion, but we think we may fairly say that up to quite recently the Argus has succeeded in doing so about as well as could be expected. It was said at one time that Reefton could not support two papers, but recent events wculd go to show that the place could not be supported by any less number.
