She is now lying in Wellington Hospital, her life being despaired of. The Asylum Enquiry was concluded yesterday : in his closing speech Shaw, the complainant, said the enquiry had branched out to be not only local but of Colonial importance and he hoped that its effect might be a good one ; it would teach people who accepted self-sovem-ment that there existed a vigilant, active and unsleeping public opinion which could not safely pass over any matter of publio concern and that it was not a matter of indifference to any individual, be he rich or poor, small or great whether a public institution was well or badly managed ; if no other good resulted than this he should consider that in briuging the sub- ,
ject forward he had rendered very good service. General opinion is that the enquiry will be fatal to Wnitelaw and probably to Inspector Skae.
