Mr Grant'Bnff said the Government had communicated with the Governor, and hoped to have a report in by abont the month of March. Mr Bradlaugh, asked the Undersecretary of State for the Colonies whether be was aware that Judge Shaw, a District Judge at taranaki New Zealand, was reported in the Budget and Taranaki Herald of Not, 13,1880, to have made the term of imprisonment of certain Natives de« pendent on the conduct of other Natives not parties to the proceedings ; and, if he was not aware of the exact facts, whether be would cause proper enquiries to be mide. Mr Grant-Duff said he knew notha ing of the affair* except what he bad seen in the newspapers alluded to, that Judge Shaw stated that had the person who had been associated with those who commuted these offences been brought to justice, their period of imprisonment would be sborteoed. The Government bad no constitutional right to interfere in the matter, the Judge being responsible to the New' I Zealand Parliament.
